Flavio GoncalvesThe Portuguese Constitutional Court declined unanimously the registration of the Portuguese Freedom Party (FP) labelling it’s statutes as “in disagreement with the legal and constitutional demands”. Among other technicalities the court pointed out that some of it’s guidelines “violated the principles of democratic organization”.
The Freedom Party is a “democratic Nationalist” party founded by former members from the National Renovation Party (NRP - Nationalist, Portuguese partner of the German NPD and the French Front National) and the New Democracy Party (NDP - Patriotic populists, in 2008 they expelled most of their more “radical nationalist” wing). Susana Barbosa, founder and former member of the NDP, states that the FP will be “a party to conquer the real Portuguese rightwing” but “without extremisms” and rooted in a “moderate and democratic nationalism”.
“We stand up for family values, freedom of speech and merit through work.” Among other guidelines the FP is opposed to the economic, cultural and financial globalization considering it as “dangerous to the independence and the identity of the nations”.
Susana Barbosa already issued a public statement, in behalf of the party, stating that they are reviewing it’s statutes and that the Constitutional Court accepted the registration of the party’s name and logo.
Humberto Nuno de Oliveira, of the National Renovation Party and critic of the creation of the Freedom Party, already pointed out the hypocrisy of the situation in it’s personal blog:
“Even though it is my belief that the (announced) differences between that party and the NRP are minimum and mostly ‘cosmetic’ or in style the truth is that it would be another bothering voice for the one way ‘democracy’. Nothing better then, being so, than forbidding it…”
