BRUSSELS, August 9 (Xinhua) -- Dutch soccer giants Ajax announced Thursday the signing of a five-year contract with Uruguayan international Luis Suarez, who played last season for Dutch club Groningen.
Under the deal, Ajax will pay a direct transfer fee of 7.5 million euros (10.2 million U.S. dollars) for the 20-year-old forward.
Once he passes the medical examination, Suarez will immediately move to Ajax and is almost certain to play for Ajax in the opening match of the new Dutch season next week.
Suarez switched to Groningen last season for a transfer fee of one million dollars from Nacional of Uruguay. He scored 10 goals in 29 league matches for Groningen, which finished eighth last season.
Rated as one of the most talented young players in Uruguay, Suarez made his debut for the Uruguayan national football team on Feb. 8, 2007 in a 3-1 win against Colombia.
Last month, he played for Uruguay in the U-20 World Championships in Canada.
